Status: Rehabilitated

Anyone who’s been anywhere near Asbury Park knows that the boardwalk in that town was once hopping. It was a popular vacation spot, but now, it’s dead with the exception of the convention hall where concerts are held, a few small shops, and places to play games such as miniature golf and New Jersey’s most popular skeeball.

The funhouse was oh so tempting to go into, but the thought of what or who would be in there to meet us deterred us from doing so. It’s a great place to walk along the deteriorating boardwalk (be careful!), but it’s not safe to go into the vacant buildings.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to Asbury Park and I thought I came home with more pictures than these. Now I’m remembering that it was so cold and windy the day we went that all we wanted to do was get the hell out of there.

2008 Return Trip
The Asbury Park boardwalk has been completely rehabilitated with new shops, businesses, and is now a busy tourist attraction. The once abandoned Casino was being worked on when we stopped to visit, although I’m not sure what it will be used for. Many other abandoned buildings near the boardwalk, such as the hotel, have been demolished.
