Status: Abandoned The Belle Mead Train Station which stands today was erected sometime in the 1940s-50s. It was a replacement for the original station which was built in the late 1800’s, and torn down in February of 1940. The first station was 3 stories tall, and had a restaurant in its lowest level. Here is a picture of it from a postcard, circa 1912. The rail line, which is now only used for freight, was closed to commuters in 1982 along with the newer station. The station was functional and had a transit agent working there until the early 1970s. The station is in a state of perpetual decay. It is covered in graphiti, the interior is falling apart, and by the looks of it, the basement has been flooded for years. Montgomery township officials have met with NJ Transit and are talking about restoring commuter service to the line. Belle Mead would then be a regular stop between Trenton and New York, which would be beneficial to residents of the many new developments in the area. The station would also need a serious facelift, or perhaps they’d just knock it down and rebuild it again. -5witchbhakk, 2003 |
