Status: Abandoned Just outside of Stokes Forest State Park near Tillman’s Ravine and the lonely Stokes/Walpack Cemetery stands a rather large abandoned home. Documents and newspapers found inside the house indicate that it has been abandoned since sometime during the 70s. If this is true, the house and its contents are in decent shape for having been abandoned for more than thirty years. There isn’t even any graffiti to be found anywhere on the walls. Very few belongings of the former owners have been left inside and the house is nearly empty. However, some exercise equipment, scales, and clothing can be found in certain rooms on the second floor. If you look at the pictures, you’ll see that the colors of the walls are absolutely obnoxious–another indication that the house probably was indeed vacant since the 70s. I personally don’t know many modern day people who would paint the walls of their house bright lime green and actually LIKE it. There are many rooms in the house, including a small bar and even a few fireplaces. The second floor has a few tiny crawl spaces, but it was too dark to go into them and no one came prepared with a flashlight. Of course, the basement was also very dark and I had to let the flash of my camera lead the way at times. There’s a pitch black, secluded room in the basement that contains what looks like a workbench or table and I’ve been told by people who’ve been there in the past that this was probably used to carve deer. It’s been speculated on that whomever owned this house was a hunter. People will even swear that there is blood on the walls above the workbench/table, but as I mentioned, it was too dark to tell. It’s even difficult to tell anything from the pictures. I don’t include directions on this site for safety reasons, but if you should seek this house out for exploration be careful of the ticks. A few people in our exploration parties both times I went were picking them off themselves on the way out. - Ember, 2003 |
